Remembered as a footnote in the story of Free, keyboard player Steve Millner also played in Black Cat Bones who featured Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke before they discovered Paul Rodgers, Aardvark played a strange kind of medieval-paced prog led by keyboards. Their only album featured the lengthy workout Once Upon A Hill/Put That In Your Pipe And Smoke It, which erred on the side of The Nice with an excellent distorted Hammond sound but their thumping bass and drums made them all the more Purple-esque without the histrionics of Ritchie Blackmore. Elsewhere they doffed a cap to RnB but it’s on their lengthy wig outs that they really shine on this super-rare Deram Nova set.
