Wow! This is a masterpiece. Arthur Prysock had been a jazz crooner in the style of Billy Ecksteine in the ‘40s and ‘50s, eventually joining soul label Old Town in the ‘60s before heading over to Verve later that decade. Having recorded with Count Basie for the label, he got together with legendary arranger and producer Mort Garson for this epic album where he recites Walter Benton’s This Is My Beloved poem over some lush strings and soulful jazz backdrops. A total departure and an album that you won’t get out of your system once you’ve heard it. Superb.
