Brought to Polydor’s attention following John peel’s playing of their Red Planet debut, Sheffield’s Comsat Angels (named after a JG Ballard book) had several Peel sessions to warm the world up to their bleak panoramas. The likes of the title track, Total War and Independence Day were frighteningly intense pieces that secured them a thinking man’s tag and a cult following. Many years later, this 1980 debut sounds as stark and mournful as can be that, somehow, they make sound incredibly accessible.
