The sleeve says: “His music is so real, we know this cat, he’s part of history playing music before it was recorded.” And you can kinda understand what the hip jargon alludes to. Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks sound like any bar room pick up band playing jug music or show tunes, rags and pre-war lullabies. ‘Striking It Rich’ is a fantastic collection, mainly due to the song selection and the band’s laidback grooviness. ‘You Got To Believe’ is a quasi religious romp, ‘I Scare Myself’ and ‘Moody Richard’ are wholesome ballads and there’s a nod to country on ‘I’m An Old Cowhand’. True hippie jokiness pervades on a stellar set.
