The third Fairports’ album from ’69 saw fiddle player Dave Swarbrick become a permanent fixture and the rootsier folk sound given an even chunkier grounding. In the aftermath of the death of drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson’s girlfriend Jeannie Franklin in a car crash, the group decided to carry on but musically they departed previous incarnations and flew headlong into an experiment where traditional folk was cast in a rock style. Inevitably purists protested but this superb album rewrote the history of folk and indeed music, and would be influential for many years to come.
