Active from the early ‘60s in a series of jazz collaborations, most notably with Don Rendell, Ian Carr started the ‘70s with the more experimental jazz rock fusion of Nucleus. Over the next decade following he released a string of groundbreaking albums, some under his own name, some as Nucleus. ‘Belladonna’, from 1972, kicks off with the lengthy alto sax-led title track before a couple of slower numbers lead in to the rampant funky strum of ‘Mayday’. Percussion heavy and with plenty of contrast within the songs themselves, ‘Belladonna’ is a great example of British fusion from the ‘70s.
