The 1971 debut of Mike Absolom was on oddity even back then. A storytelling acid folkie for the stoner generation, Absolom was a renaissance man who dabbled in all forms of the arts and was picked up by Vertigo for an album’s-worth of fried anecdotes like ‘The Saga Of Peaches Melba And The Hash Officer’ and ‘The Saga Of Susie Grapevine And Pusher Joe’. Double entendres, odes to drug taking and loose sex emanate in the London hippie parlance of the time all set to ragtime piano or subdued guitar with Absolom’s cheeky dialogue sounding like Devendra Banhardt turned Russell Brand-style court jester.
