A year after grimacing in the background as Bill Grundy goaded The Sex Pistols’ four letter outburst on ITV, Siouxsie Sioux and her Banshees had shed Sid Vicious, played several Peel session and signed to Polydor for 1978’s debut album that was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Bringing out the austerity of their drum kit, John McKay’s industrial guitar sound and subject matter to trouble the tabloids, The Scream is a teutonic treat with their tub thumping rhythms carving through Helter Skelter, Carcass, Jigsaw Feeling and Suburban Relapse, all being delivered like grating sketches of dysfunctional youth.
