Featuring members of psyche popsters Art, RnB and beat combos The Ramrods and The VIPS, Spooky Tooth were one of the few bands from the later ‘60s to be keyboard-led. Their debut album for Island, from 1967, mixed all their previous elements and added a soulful undercurrent on covers of Janis Ian’s Society’s Chid and a bluesy rock veneer to The Nashville Teens’ Tobacco Road, with Gary Wright’s keyboard sound identifying them as something quite different for the time.
