Having played with Johnny Dankworth, Kenny Wheeler and Graham Collier in the ‘60s, the Zimbabwean born composer, arranger and producer signed to Deram in the early ‘70s, where his orchestrations and arrangements became a key influencer on the jazz and jazz-rock fusion scenes. Having played in the US and been inspired by Gil Evans and Charles Ives, Gibbs’ early 1970s music has been likened to the kind of music that The Beatles’ imaginary Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band would have played if they had actually existed. Mixing classical, jazz and contemporary rock sounds, with an accessible commercial feel, his self titled debut and the psychedelic Tanglewood '63 are glorious evocations of sound, very much the inspiration for the likes of Colosseum and their ilk.
