I'm Loving Angel Instead!
Scuppered by the arrival of punk, Angel were a real oddity, a five-piece pop metal band with chirpy almost synthetic keyboard breaks courtesy of Gregg Giuffra, who were signed to Kiss’s Casablanca label by the band’s Gene Simmons almost as an antidote to the Kiss bombast that had elevated them to huge US stadium success. Hailing from Washington DC, Angel, originally led by guitarist Punky Meadows, wore white, looked pampered and pristine and had an androgynous edginess that inspired Frank Zappa to write the song ‘Punky Whips’ lambasting their seemingly wanton imagery. On the metal side of The New York Dolls, they were similarly given short shrift by the media but their cult status was secured and the post Guns ‘n’ Roses’ hair metal explosion of Poison et al surely owed a debt to their genre-busting style. Controversial to the last, they remain active today – even if most of the key early members have moved on. However, we can still remember them in all their pomp and multi harmonies, their pure white outfits and crinkle-rollered hair, all invariably ready to rock. Angel - Sinful
