It's Hancock
Britain of the 1950’s was in an austere post-war mood and in desperate need of a laugh. Rationing had only recently ended and the birth of Skiffle and Rock and Roll was looming on the horizon, as if cueing a period of social and economic change. As Britain teetered on the verge of these new horizons, a comic performer entered the hearts of a radio (and later television) audience that would eventually number a third of the adult population of the UK. When “Hancock’s Half Hour” was broadcast, theatre managers and pub landlords would claim that attendances of their establishments would be seriously reduced, such was the popularity of Tony Hancock.
